The Cattle Market development (Arc)
Arc will be the new name for what is being built upon the old Cattle
Market site in Bury St Edmunds. It is located on 5.4 hectares of brown field
site in the centre of town, which until recently was a car park. The
development is includes 36 shops (most notably a Debenhams department store),
with 65 residential apartments above, a Public Venue building (multi purpose
venue) and underground car parking. It is set to open in Spring 2009, and the
total value of the project is in the region of £105 million.
The advantages of the project are:
- It will strengthen the choice of shopping in the town
- It will encourage town centre use from outlying residential areas (people will not need to travel to Cambridge or Norwich as they currently do)
- It will encourage an evening culture
Bury St Edmunds Town Centre Management aims to:
- Prepare for the integration of the new development into the town to increase the overall attraction of Bury St Edmunds as a place to shop, whilst maintaining the economic vibrancy of the existing town.
- Work with other organisations towards the Cattle Market Launch Plan, PR and success metrics.
- Look at long term requirements arising from the development and enhancement of Bury St Edmunds.
